I went into HAIRSMITH of West Dundee, Illinois for a haircut and advertised on the door was "$14.99 Haircut." The stylist did a VERY good job. Near the end of the haircut, Jim Horn, the owner said that there was an $5 extra charge for very long hair. I have shoulder length hair. I paid the extra cheerfully, tipped the stylist generously and went on my way.
The third-again-as-much charge for medium length hair bothered me and I went in the next day to explain this to the owners. I was not looking for a refund, but something more in the line of an "Oh, geez. We should have stated that when you came in for the haircut. Here's a coupon for $3 good on your next haircut, and just so you know - it is a $19.99 haircut. Hope to see you soon!"
Not so much. I went in and both owners were present. They immediately went on the defensive as I explained what had made me uncomfortable - not the extra charge, but it not being stated up front. They were very nasty, rude and almost accusing. I told them that I didn't think that shoulder length hair was VERY LONG HAIR. They said that it was and that the advertised price didn't apply to VERY long hair. I said that maybe that should be on the price list, and they pointed to a line at the bottom of the price sheet about very long hair being at an extra charge. Then they said that they didn't care I saw that or not. I was appalled at their attitude. I stated that I wouldn't be back even though the stylist had done a great job. The owner, Jim Horn, said that he didn't care if I didn't come back. I then stated that it was a shame because how I was being treated I couldn't, now, reccomend to others to patronize their business. Again he told me in no uncertain terms that he couldn't care less about how I felt. The other owner, Mac, said "Hit the door and we don't care if you come back or not."
Never have I been treated so badly, especially in a service oriented industry. I work in customer service and therefore, I was careful not to be rude when I walked into the shop. I was simply going to express my concern - not get a refund and certainly not to be berated and yelled at. |
