I took my husband to the ER at Integris Southwest Medical Hospital on March 6th, 2007. We told them, we thought he was having a gallbladder attach. He described his symptoms. They checked him right in to ER, no waiting at 11:38 pm. They started taking vitals and asking questions about the pain. My husband responded. They ran EKG's, Ultra-sounds, Cat Scan and took blood. Gave him 4 cc of Morphine every 4 hrs. We stayed down in ER until 12:58 pm the following day March 7th for lack of beds. They gave him Nitro patches, bloodthinner shots, had him hooked to a heart monitor 27/7. A Surgeon finally came in around 6:30pm on March 7th to tell us that yes, he had two gallstones and several kidney stones. He didn't think that it was his gallbladder or kidney stones. He thought maybe he had an infection down in his intestines somewhere. He said, that they were going to keep him a couple of days. Put him on a liquid diet and antibiotics for a couple of days and see if the pain subsides. If it did not then we were looking a exporatory surgery. Low and behold, the next day March 8th they released him still in pain! Gave him a prescrition for Loritab 7.5 mg. Scheduled for him an immediate appointment with his urologist because they finally came to the conclusion that it was a kidney stone causing the problem. When all along my husband told them he knew what a stone felt like, and this was nothing like that pain. So, we leave the hospital walked over to his urologist. He gave his a shot or Toradoyl for pain. He looked at the CAT scan and told my husband it was not a kidney stone . He felt like it was something more serious. He suggested we go see a gastrointerologist. So we came home. I started calling around for a specialist to see him as soon as possible. No one could get him in for weeks. I knew he could not stand the pain that long. The next morning which was March 8th, I called some more gastrointerologist still no one would see him right away. He is taking the Loritabs by twos for the pain. So Friday came around and his pain was still bothering him. I told him to let's go to another ER at Integis Baptist Hospital before it got to late. So we headed out the door at 10:30am that morning. We arrived and told them the story of what had happened. They took him right back sent for all the test results from Southwest. The Dr. came and and could not believe they didn't realize it was his gallbladder. He said, he had classic gallbadder symtoms. He asked, my husband when he wanted surgery. He told the Dr. as soon as possible. The Dr. said, today if I can get it? My husband said, Yes. He came back and said the soonest he could get the surgery scheduled was for in the morning on Saturday. So they checked him in and surgery was performed the next morning at 9:30 am on March 10th. The surgeon said, it was inflamed. The wall of his gallbladder was 1/4 of an inch thick when it's suppose to be paper thin.. She came out of surgery and said, it took longer than usual as she had to wait for the smoke to clear before proceeding with the surgery. She removed two large stones. One had to be crushed to remove it.
Can't sue them because he did not suffer any long term problems. This is plain Incompetence! NO one should have to pay for this kind of service! Mind you we have no health insurance. |
