I had several days left on a lease, had not done the final walk through, had not turned in the keys, and the apartment manager told a construction crew that the place was vacant and to go in and do some upgrades. When I went to pick up some more of my belongings after work, the place had been ransacked and everything was gone. They had not only taken my things, they had ripped open boxes, gone through personal documents, ( family pictures, medical records, tax returns, etc) broken several items, and thrown things around the apartment. They stole my clothing, my jewelry ( some of which belonged to my Grandmother) lamps, plants, kitchen items, anything and everything that they could haul away in the company van. The apartment was FULL of my personal belongings - closets had clothes in them, boxes were packed and stacked in the living room - how could this possibly looked like an abandoned apartment - there was food in the refrigerator!!! This was all done in broad daylight - and no one saw anything or thought this looked suspicious????? I reported it immediately to the maintenance manager as the office was closed and then to the Police. The apartment manager called the construction company who made the crew return the items - only they returned MOST, but not all of the missing items. I was told that since they made the effort to drive back to Jacksonville with what they took, "they didn't really intend to deprive me of my personal belongings" !!!!!!! Were they BORROWING the items??????? I have never received an apology from the apartment manager or the company who owns the complex, or the construction crew. Everyone got to keep their jobs, no one was punished, and I am left with missing items, and a sense of disgust and violation knowing that these men went through my personal papers and belongings. I have contacted several attorneys to try to file a civil suit and was told that it was either a waste of their time or that I would have to pay thousands of dollars up front ... the last attorney was very nice but became ill and closed his practice before any action was taken so the case was "closed". |
