St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Juneau, Alaska added $30 to to a $4 purchase (a blanket) and when they gave my mom the slip to sign she asked what it was for they told her it was a fee for using her card to pay. They told her it was "POSTED" (more on that later!) and she signed the form and left with the blanket in total shock, and simply said later she is just never going back again.
This was only a couple weeks ago, and my mom does not want to waste her energy bothering to get her money back, so as I had occasion to go see the store yesterday I searched the counter area for the posted policy and saw nothing. I went outside and looked at the walls / doors and still saw nothing, however one door was propped all the way open against the wall and after peaking around the door I saw there WAS a sign there, FACING THE WALL.
The sign said that as of September 1, 2009, all card purchases for under $10 will be assessed a $30 fee.
I called St. Vinny's the same day I heard from my mom what happened, as well as trying to report it to a few other agencies but there isn't much I can do without her wanting to fight about it. I left them a voicemail describing what happened and they DID call back leaving me a voicemail.
Someone named "Ken" who did not leave a last name or title or contact number, said that couldn't be, they would not do such a thing, and perhaps it was a THIRTY CENT charge that accidentally got entered as $30.00.
I left him one more voicemail stating there was no question my mother spoke to the woman about the amount of the charge, and heard nothing back.
I wish to report this as effectively as I can to STOP them because many other elderly persons would do exactly as my mom did -- silently hand over her money rather than dinking around with a 'charitable organization.'
I am not dissing the organization, only the persons in the Juneau chapter who are blatantly breaking the law, and I can tell you they KNOW the laws about electronic purchases before they set them up at the cash register, as I also reported this to my mom's bank and they let me know the company had to know it was against the law, and of course they certainly could help her get her money back if she wanted to report it, and likely the store would lose its right to make plastic transactions over the deal. |
