I have visited the Log barn in Armstrong last summer on our vacation to B.C. We stopped in to see the goats and see what was at the barn for sale.
We were told that the fruit was locally grown and just picked the evening before. The fruit was in baskets on a large table with a sign that says please don't touch the fruit. The peaches and berries on the top appeared to be perfect and delicious and although it was rather expensive we decided that we just had to have some fruit for the road. we also purchased some sausage that we were told was unique and exclusive to the log barn. I believe it is called Mennonite sausage . We were told it was a family recipe and we were fed a long winded story of the families Mennonite harritige and reclamations etc.
The family seemed to be sincere and Cristian like and so we allowed them to lead us around the store some. we were shown the gift section and although it was rather expensive my wife found a blanket she rather liked and was sold on it when she was told it was a one of a kind. we also bought some honey mustard as well as jams and jellies. I think we dropped at least $150 onto our visa there.
When we were packing all of our purchases into the van my children noticed that the peaches under the first row in the basket were totally rotten and bruised . we had a discussion amongst ourselves when a young man who was getting back into his own vehicle said you too huh? He had just come from complaining to the staff about his purchases and was told that he could not exchange nor have a refund. I looked at my wirfe and told her we should just go. we drove a few miles into the neighboring town of Enderby and stopped for gas at the local gas bar, while i was filling the van the kids and my wife walked to the edge of the lot where there was a swap meet of sorts happening there were several stands set up with a veriety of diferent items, and guess what we found there? Yup the one of a kind blanket my wife had paid way too much for . And the vendor here had 20 or more of the very same one for $20 ea ! I was really starting to boil over and told the vendor of our peaches and one of a kind Blanket . He seemed to know the Log Barn and the owners and had heard the same story all the time from tourists. He told me that the jams jellies and jarred goods were bought in bulk from costco and other bulk suppliers and that they were relabelling the items to sell as home made goods. He even told me that the Barn has had the food agency there and fined them for doing this ! he asked what i paid for these items and snicked "good ol Christians they are" ! He told me stories of the trouble he knew of with the family members and gun charges drugs and ripping off the public. I was absolutely floored that these seemingly seet old couple had lied to our faces with a smile. Wecontinued on our way and while in kamloops we were eating from the fruit baskets and guess what? more rotten fruit. I pulled over and tossed the fruit baskets into the trash bin and we went to a restaurant to eat. while there we talked it over more and decided that we were going to inform our friends and family to not go there due to our personal experience. that evening we found a camp site and were getting the sasauge out to roat over the fire and guess what? yup ! expired by one day. unbelievable !!!!
When we got back home to Calgary I was very tempted to call up the log barn but after seeing the poor fellow being refussed his money and the vendors stories of the barn I decided it would be of no use. I did however look up the log barn on the internet and guess what? yup RIPOFF REPORT.COM /log barn 1912 had alot of reports on exactly what we had happen to us and some even worse. people being verbally assaulted and threatened. I also discovered that the owner of the log barn had been charged and fined by the bc food inspectors for labellings . Wow was i shocked the vendor had told me the truth ! Also i found on the internet that the log barn food company was shut down here in our city for operating without a bussiness license too ! The reason I am filing this complaint today is that the log barn 1912 has set up a store on 16th ave and is now open for business ! I stopped by there to see if the products were the same and if they were pulling the same scams here as well. and let me tell you they are and I hope someone who is not as nice as me gives them a blast. the sausage is not free of preservatives and after reading the labeling charges against the owners i bet that it too is not home made. It is repulsive that a bussiness would lie and charge so much . This is just my opinion and experience with being cheated out of my hard earned money. Please if it has happened to you file your complaints to stop this from going on any further.
