Christmas Disappointment
I bought my wife a diamond necklace at the Barrie W.J. Shaw Jewellers location as a Christmas present. At the time, they had a sale due to the fact they were closing their Barrie store. Because the store had signs saying that all sales were final, my brother-in-law and I were not going to make our purchases there. Knowing that my wife liked and requested a particular item and that this was close but not the one she had requested, I was reluctant to make the purchase without being able to return it. The salesperson who we dealt with noticed our reluctance, heard our concerns, and told us that we could return the items if there was a problem. We discussed it further and addressed the signage stating all sales final. She guaranteed us that we could return it for full refund and that if their store was closed by that time, we could just deal directly with their Orillia location. We left store without buying the items, walked around the mall to talk it over and decided to go back. Once again we discussed the terms of sale and the salesperson reassured us the necklace would be accepted for return if needed. That being our deciding factor, we both made Christmas gift purchases. Once the gifts were opened, I found that the item I purchased was not to my wife's liking. I went back to the Barrie store to return the item and was told that they would not accept it for refund. I explained the multiple conversations that we had with the salesperson regarding the return of the item and the Manager became involved. She stated that they would not refund our purchase but would consider it for exchange only. After several faxes to that manager requesting a phone call after 5pm when we would be home to discuss the situation, we still had no resolution. Instead we received numerous calls during the day when we were out, re-iterating that they would offer exchange only. This would have to be completed before the end of January, at the Barrie location only, severely limiting the selection for the return. My wife did in fact visit the store in the hopes of finding an suitable item for exchange and therefore resolve our issue but due to store clearance, and as expected, the inventory was extremely limited with nothing of comparable value to her liking. We decided at that time that there was no possibility of a resolution through the Barrie location and that we would escalate our issue to Mr. Shaw directly at head office in Orillia. We faxed his office on numerous occasions and called direct 4 times to no avail. Mr. Shaw never responded leaving us no alternative but to contact the Better Business Bureau for assistance. We went through the process with them only to have them close the issue as disputed because W. J. Shaw Jewellers would not respond to them. I was shocked to learn that this was even an option and disappointed that Mr. Shaw would take this route. I was infuriated that this company would not stand behind their employees and that customer loyalty for them only seems to extend to the point where the final sale made and they have the cash in hand. I felt that I was mislead in order to make a sale. What was meant to be a special gift for my wife has become a personal and financial nightmare that has caused nothing but hurt. This is not a business that I would ever privilege with my hard earned money again and would recommend others learn from my mistake.
